“I (Sergey Naumov) have invented the conception, Ravil Jusupov made the figure which was painted by me as well and Maxim Aleshkin had taken a photograph of two versions of the image. I had also made the frame and some part of small details of the sculpture at the stage of decorating. So this is a collective work, continuation of which will be a sculpture (the height is 2 meters).”
Text of the explication for the project:
“The Emperor.
We would like to offer to you a project of an ideal memorial, which combine in itself approved form (figure of August from the Vatican’s museum) and the head of Phantomas, which symbolizes “today” (as well as dependence from stamps of mass culture). The necessity of turning to the tradition is called forth the system of our perception that is able to identify something new only through the comparing with something that is already known.
The image of divine Octavian August as the first roman emperor (Caesar was just a dictator) plays for the following images of emperors the very same role as the “one” number means for the following row of numbers in arithmetic. August always will be the symbol of power and hopes concerned with the power. By hiding the real face of Emperor the mask of Phantomas emphasizes the distance between the emperor and mere mortal. The monument always will be relevant because the viewer will never see who is hiding by the mask of Emperor, still everyone knows this person well. As the sculpture presents the mask that refers to the owner of it, but doesn’t present the face, the owner of sculpture will never be accused in the servility. The Emperor as the collective and ideal image will always be a monument to everyone by symbolizing the possibility to become the Emperor for all of us. For the very same reason it will never offend anyone in case of installing it in Moscow and will never be destroyed. Because of its singularity and recognition the monument become a favorite one for the citizens. Depending on the purpose the size of monument may verify from the decoration for the island to souvenir. It may replicate in any quantity if other cities would like to install it. The material may verify as well.
We don’t know if we are staying the Third Rome but we would like to hear what the Emperor will say to the city and to the word.”
